Order Order | 2024’s Last Chapter: Ready for 2025!
31 Dec 2024
As we close the chapter on 2024 and look ahead to the new year, I’ve been reflecting on the journey we've shared over the past 12 months. It's been a year filled with change, growth, and learning — not just for me personally, but for Parliament as a whole. This year has been about finding fresh ways to connect with Singaporeans, raising awareness of key issues, and expanding how we engaged with our community.
I’m both excited and optimistic about the challenges and opportunities ahead as we step into 2025. Each year is a new chance to serve, to learn, and to grow together. Let’s dive into what made 2024 so meaningful for us.
A FULFILLING YEAR OF SITTINGS, ENGAGEMENTS AND NEW EXPERIENCES
2024 was an exceptionally busy and fulfilling year. Across 30 parliamentary sittings, we spent a total of 239 hours and 54 minutes deliberating on issues that matter to Singaporeans. The longest sitting lasted 11 hours and 34 minutes (break included) – a testament to our collective dedication.
This year, Parliament tackled 6 Ministerial Statements, 50 Bills (highest number in last 5 years), 8 Motions and 17 Adjournment Motions (new record high). We also answered an impressive 2,422 Parliamentary Questions (another new record high). Some of the most robust debates included the Advancing Mental Health motion (with 28 members speaking) and the Platform Workers Bill (26 members contributed). And there was also the Good Samaritan Food Donation Bill, a Private Members bill that was debated by some 17 members and successfully passed. Of course, we also saw the Olympic and Paralympic Achievements motion that was unanimously passed to salute our courageous athletes for their outstanding achievements at the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Through it all, what struck me most was the shared commitment to serve the people of Singapore. On a lighter note, I’m thankful that my back held up despite the long hours! Another reason why I still need to build up my stamina, stay healthy and fit.

CONNECTING WITH YOUTH: A PERSONAL PRIORITY
One of my key takeaways this year is the importance of engaging with our youth. As Speaker, I’ve always believed that Parliament must remain relevant to all Singaporeans – and that means creating opportunities to connect directly with young people. The laws that we make in Parliament affects all and for the younger ones, even more critical as they have a longer runway to journey.
In 2024, I made it a point to hear from students, young professionals, and youth leaders. Their ideas, concerns, and hopes for Singapore are inspiring, and I’m grateful for every chance I’ve had to engage them in discussions about our shared future. These conversations reaffirm my belief that when we empower young people to participate actively in our democracy, we strengthen the bond between Parliament and the people we serve.
Always enjoyable to hear views from students, young professionals and youth leaders
EXPLORING NEW PLATFORMS TO REACH THE NEXT GENERATION
This year, I also tried my hand at some new and unexpected things. One highlight was appearing on Koocester’s social media platforms, which brought Parliament’s work to a younger audience in a fun and engaging way.
Another memorable moment was collaborating with Youtuber Ghib Ojisan to showcase the vibrant community work in my constituency. I also had a session with Ms Maureen Ow, aka Miss Tamchiak. Together, we shared the stories of residents and the bonds we’ve built through the years. Seeing their enthusiasm reminds me why it’s important to meet people where they are – whether that’s on social media or in person.

A NEW ADVENTURE: MY TIKTOK JOURNEY
Speaking of social media, I also launched my own TikTok channel this year – a personal experiment to connect with a broader audience. I’ve enjoyed the process immensely though it’s been a steep learning curve (the platform is faster-paced than I expected!). But I must say I am more active on Instagram and Facebook.

My goal is simple: to communicate in ways that resonate with all Singaporeans. I’ve learned that you’re never too old to embrace something new. For me, this is just the beginning of finding fresh ways to engage meaningfully with our community.
AMPLIFYING COMMUNITY EFFORTS
Beyond social media, one of the most fulfilling aspects of my role is participating in events organised by amazing organisations like Down Syndrome Association, the Singapore Cancer Society, Singapore Children's Society, Singapore Red Cross and the Singapore Women’s Association, among many others.

To continue with the efforts of uplifting the community, the Parliament house team has partnered with partners such as Children’s Wishing Well to bring joy to beneficiaries. We had a meaningful and enjoyable time doing grocery shopping with the children!

Each event is an opportunity to amplify the incredible work being done to serve our communities. By raising awareness of these initiatives, we can build a chain effect – mobilising more people to support those in need. Being part of this collective effort is deeply meaningful to me. It will always be work in progress, but I hope everyone of us will do more to make Singapore a more giving, caring, compassionate and inclusive society.
WELCOMING FRIENDS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
As Speaker, fostering relationships with counterparts from other countries is an important part of my role. This year, Parliament welcomed esteemed Speakers from Azerbaijan, the Czech Republic, Hong Kong, Tonga, New Zealand and Vietnam, as well as Ambassadors from countries like Cuba, Egypt, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Republic of Korea and Qatar.

Due to ongoing renovations at our Istana, Parliament House also hosted state visits from leaders of Abu Dubai, India, Laos, Republic of Korea, and Sweden among others. One particularly memorable moment was hosting Pope Francis during his historic visit to Singapore. And then there was the visit by The King of Malaysia, His Majesty Sultan Iskandar Ibrahim to Parliament and to observe a parliamentary sitting in session. It’s been an extraordinary year of connection and collaboration on the international stage.

LOOKING AHEAD - THE FUTURE OF PARLIAMENT
As we move into 2025, I’m excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. One area I’m eager to explore is the metaverse – a new frontier that could bring Parliament even closer to Singaporeans. Yes, something is brewing on this front …. the potential is limitless!
I’m also keen to modernise Parliament’s language to ensure it stays accessible and relatable, especially for younger generations. Language has the power to bring us together, and I’m committed to making our parliamentary discourse relevant to everyone while maintaining the gravitas that comes with our important work.
2025, A YEAR OF GROWTH AND LEARNING
As we step into the new year, I remain passionate and committed to making Parliament a space where all Singaporeans feel heard, valued, and involved. Whether through social media, digital platforms, or new initiatives, my mission remains the same: to serve with heart and purpose.
Here’s to a bright and exciting 2025. Happy New Year, everyone – and thank you for being part of this journey with my team and me. Let’s look forward to the future together!
Signing off 2024 and welcoming 2025,
Seah Kian Peng
